Preparatory Meeting


In the 14 th of August of 2003, under the auspices of the Organization of American States (OAS), a group of Science Academies of the Americas met to discuss the possibility of creating a network of existing national and regional Academies of Sciences in the hemisphere. A meeting of the Latin American and Caribbean Academies was scheduled for the 15 th and 16 th of August at Mexico City, where this issue was in the agenda, and this meeting at Washington aimed at discussing with the Academies of Canada and the US the intentions of this initiative.

This was a preliminary meeting, bringing together the Presidents of the National Academies of Brazil, Canada, Mexico and the US, as well as the President of the Latin American Academy of Sciences. At the opportunity, the present Academies discussed with representatives of Inter American organizations opportunities of cooperation between the scientific community in the hemisphere and regional multilateral organizations.
