She is an Environmental Engineer from Mexico and received her PhD in wastewater treatment and reuse in France. She is full researcher at the Environmental Engineering Department of the Institute of Engineering of UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico). She has authored more than 230 papers, presented in international scientific journals, books and conferences. In 2009 she received in the Mexican National Prize for Science. She was president of the Environmental Engineers’ Association (1999-2000), and of the Mexican Federation of Sanitary Engineers and Environmental Science Association (2001-2002). She has contributed to setting the technical content of most of the norms on wastewater and reuse in Mexico and has been part of international committees for UNESCO and WHO to discuss water reuse guidelines. She was part of the Board of Directors of the International Water Association (2004-2008) and chair of the IWA Water Reuse Specialist Group. She is part of the editorial committees of several international journals such as Water Science and Technology, and The Journal of Residuals Science and Technology. She is the coordinating leading author for the Water Resources chapter for the 5th IPCC Assessment on Climate Change. In 2010 she was awarded the Global Water Award by the IWA.
