Monica Moraes

National herbarium of Bolivia, Institute of Ecology, Universidad Mayor de San Andrés

I studied biology at the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés in La Paz (Bolivia) and at the Department of Biological Sciences of the University of Aarhus in Denmark (MSc 1989, PhD 1996 both in systematic botany). Since 1990, I am full researcher & palm curator at the National Herbarium and professor for Botany, Plant Management, Scientific writing, Evaluation of projects, and others at the Biology career at the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés. I was director of the National herbarium (1996-1999, 2009-2011) and Director of the Institute of Ecology (1999-2002, 2011-2013).

  • Plant-animal relationships
  • Ethnobotany and conservation
  • Forest ́s products, harvesting & sustainable production
  • and particularly as palms researcher on taxonomy, distribution, ecology, conservation, and management of Bolivian palms

I have been designated as academic of the Bolivian Academy of Sciences since 2007 and was appointed as focal point for the IANAS Women for Science program.
